THE MOST 20 ANTICIPATED MOVIES IN 2021
With 2020 a real shipwreck, 2021 is an opportunity for us to get back on our feet and breathe some fresh air. And fortunately, there’s good to look forward to this year. A major pandemic vaccine is already being developed. There is also the fact that it is a new year to start new and exciting things.
But if you find yourself on the list of good reasons to be enthusiastic about 2021, there is the fact that film studios have enough confidence in themselves to make films again. This means that after a difficult year, we finally have the chance to see new films in cinemas.
It sounds almost surreal, but it is the truth. With many films scheduled for 2020, the studios had to rotate strongly once the pandemic arrived and delayed the release and filming dates. It’s been a year full of all kinds of fantastic movies that we can all look forward to.
To refresh our memory, we have compiled a list of the films most expected by people. These are the releases of the likes of Wes Anderson, Steven Spielberg, and Marvel.
There’s even a James Bond movie. Let’s keep all our masks, and cross our fingers so we can all go back to the movies and enjoy these movies.
Chloe Zhao is an actress who has been around for some time, but this year she will explode in the film industry. She already has a directing role with Marvel, directing The Eternals – another film on the list – but she is also expected to be the favorite for best director at this year’s Oscars.
The reason is her own talent as a director in this film – Nomadland. It stars France McDormand as a rootless woman living in a van and is expected to be a very moving film.
You should see it by mid-February of this year.
Another person who joins the Marvel universe is Jared Leto who felt that the Joker was not enough. Leto will play the role of Michael Morbius, a biochemist who makes a serious mistake in the middle of the experiment and accidentally injects himself with unusual blood. This blood then gives it a form of vampirism. According to the comics, if the film relies heavily on the original material, one can expect to see Leto face Tom Holland’s Spider-Man soon enough. The film is scheduled for release in mid-March of this year.
NO TIME TO DIE
The expectation of this film was ridiculous – but I hope the wait was worth it. Daniel Craig Bond’s latest film had several booths along the way. There was the pandemic, of course, but there were also things like physical injuries. All we can hope for is that the studio can release it in early April. This will be the 25th episode of Bond, Craig’s last film under his direction. This film features Lashana Lynch as 007, a large dose of Madeleine Swann, and a theme song performed by Billie Eilish.
A QUIET PLACE: PART 2
Due to the favorable reception of this film in 2018, the studio behind A Quiet Place has decided to release a second installment. In this sequel, Emily Blunt will reprise her role as matriarch of her very quiet family who hides from creatures that hunt for sound. In this film, the plot will show the family venturing out of their “safe zone”, quickly realizing that these creatures are not the only threats that exist. The film is expected to be released at the end of April.
LAST NIGHT IN SOHO
Written and directed by Edgar Wright, this film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a woman who travels back in time into the 1960s. While one might think that all this is joyful and fun, the film suddenly takes a turn of horror films that one would not expect. The film is due out at the end of April and also features the late Diana Rigg.
THE FRENCH DISPATCH
There are many Oscar nominees this year, but this film is at the top of the list of critics’ considerations. It was one of the films scheduled for release in 2020 but has since been pushed out this year. Nevertheless, this film directed by Wes Anderson is described as “a love letter to journalists that takes place in an outpost of an American newspaper in 20th century Paris and focuses on three scenarios”.
As you would expect in a film directed by Anderson, you have a set of stars with Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Lyna Khoudri, Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, Steve Park, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and many other regular favorites of the director.
The film is expected to be released in May of this year.
Although the Avengers lost Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame, this was not the last time Scarlett Johansson played the role of Natasha Romanoff. In her first independent film, we go back in time to see what her life was like at home. In the timeline, this film takes place after the events of Captain America: The Civil War where Romanoff has to deal with the family fallout she left behind. It was at this time that Florence Pugh and David Harbour made their debuts in the Marvel universe. This film will be released in early May of this year.
FAST – FURIOUS 9
The Fast and the Furious franchise has gone from a series of street races to a group of quasi-superheroes who save the world. With nine films under his belt, this episode tells the story of Dominic and his family who confront Dominic’s brother, Jakob, a mortal assassin who works with an old enemy. On top of that, we’ve seen Han reappear in the trailer that is GREAT for longtime fans of this series. It will be released at the end of May this year.
CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT
In the third chapter of the Conjuring franchise, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. As the film follows two paranormal investigators in real life, this film takes a turn when a murder suspect claims he was possessed by a demon, which led him to commit his crimes. The film is expected to be released in early June of this year.
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
It’s been 34 years since Tom Cruise was in a cockpit, but don’t think his rust will slow him down. Maverick is as confident as ever, testing the limits of physics and authority. However, two major events will change the situation: a dangerous Top Gun mission and the arrival of the son of his best friend Goose. The film will be released in early July 2021.
SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS
Intended to be the 25th film of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), this is the first cinematic appearance of martial arts superhero Shang-Chi who made his comic book debut in 1973. Now, 50 years later, Marvel is taking care of this superhero and bringing him a much-needed improvement to his story. It stars Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who will be donning the bright red jumpsuit this summer.
SPACE JAM: A NEW LEG
Those who grew up in the 90s certainly remember the movie Space Jam, which brought together basketball star Michael Jordan and many famous cartoon characters from the Looney Toons series. In this sequel, after 25 years, this new film features LeBron James in his role and that of a whole series of other superstars of the NBA and WNBA. Expect to see athletes like Klay Thompson, Chris Paul and Diana Taurasi. Together with Ryan Coogler and James, himself, as producers, they give us this new story where James is looking for his son Bronny while he and the Looney Toons gang sift through the Warner Bros. catalog. Let’s cross our fingers to find a Harry Potter crossover somewhere in this catalog. This film will not be released until mid-July of this year.
After The Suicide Squad was rejected by fans, this hybrid reboot/sequel from the 2016 film of the same name is an attempt to make things work. This take will be the protagonist of the group of rabid anti-heroes, led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who walk around doing good deeds in exchange for redemption or a lighter prison sentence. Margot Robbie and Idris Elba are simply hoping for a better result for this round. However, they will have to wait a bit because this film will not be released until the beginning of August of this year.
Despite the name of this title, it is not a warm film. Especially when you know it’s Jordan Peele. After the success of getting Out and Us, he’s back. Directed by Nia DaCosta, this sequel to the 1992 Candyman takes place in the same Chicago neighborhood as the first film.
The film follows visual artist Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend, director of an art gallery, who move to the neighborhood, which is now very gentrified. When his career ends, McCoy stumbles upon an old individual who is then exposed to the Candyman, bringing him back years after he first terrorized the community.
The film is expected to be released at the end of August this year.
Based on one of the most famous science fiction novels of all time, Dune’s film adaptation is intended to introduce the book to a new light. This is to be expected, as it stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and many others. This adaptation of the 1965 novel follows Paul Atreides, whose family commands Arrakis – a plant that produces a substance called spice, essential for exploration and space travel. The film is scheduled for release in early October of this year.
With the Avengers having their last movie together, you may miss the Marvel movies. Fortunately, the filmmakers realized this and found another superhero team to follow: The Eternals. In this film, we will follow this group, which features amazing actors like Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, and many others, who play the role of a group of immortal superheroes whose very presence has shaped the history of the Earth. The film is expected to be released in early November this year.
UNTITLED FILM ABOUT SPIDER-MAN
At the time of writing, we do not have the title of this new film, although this is normal because Marvel Studios and Sony have been fighting over the title of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man after the second film. Fortunately, the two parties have reached an agreement and we will see the canvas launcher appear not only in one but at least in two other films. This third film, which takes up the cliffhanger of the second part, will be released in early November.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7
2021 is a great year for Tom Cruise. Not only will he be in Top Gun: Maverick (as mentioned above), he will return to play his most iconic character in the seventh installment of this spy franchise. We don’t know much about the plot, except for two things. The first is that Ethan Hunt should perform some of the craziest stunts we’ve ever seen. Naturally, Cruise is known for doing most of his own stunts, and this time it’s no different. The second is that he must face one of the notoriously dangerous characters in this franchise to be played by Hayley Atwell.
And if this movie makes you want to see more, don’t worry. The 8th episode of this franchise is scheduled for November 2022. As for this film, it will be released in mid-November of this year.
WEST SIDE STORY
One of the most iconic musicals of all time has been being refined since its first adaptation in 1961. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this film will follow the plot of directing a New York version of Romeo and Juliet from the 1950s. While Ansel Elgort plays the role of Tony, the real excitement comes from newcomer Rachel Zegler. Straight out of high school, her name went from darkness to Maria’s iconic role. We won’t see how she gets away with it until the film is released in early December of this year.
We’ll have to wait until 2022 to see John Wick’s next film, but we’ll still have a chance to swoon in front of Keanu Reeves earlier than that in the next episode of Matrix. As for the plot, it’s a well-kept secret for now, but it will be interesting to see in which direction this film will evolve after the end of the story almost 20 years ago. This film should be released a few days before Christmas 2021.
